La Marseillaise is a patriotic song from the French Revolution adopted by France as its national anthem. The theme was written by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle, Captain of the Engineers then stationed in Strasbourg on the night of April 25 to 26, 1792 following France's declaration of war on the Austria of April 20, 1792.
